REAL WORLD LEARNING

Located in the beautiful surroundings of Guildford Grammar School, students can enrol in a single half day session or make it a full day and book both morning and afternoon workshops.

Young Engineers

Ages: 8-10
Learning Area Focus: Engineering
Date: 16 April 2019
Time: 9:30 AM – 12:00 PM

Details: As one famous engineer once said, Failure is central to engineering. Every single calculation that an engineer makes is a failure calculation. Successful engineering is all about understanding how things break or fail.” So put your skills to the test and plan, build and let it all crash to the ground in this exciting fast paced engineering feat. Build the sturdiest bridge and test your model for strength and stability. This workshop brings together like minded students who enhance each other’s learning.


Chess Masters

Ages: 8-10
Learning Area Focus: Mathematics
Date: 16 April 2019
Time: 12:45 – 3:15 PM

Details: “Every chess master was once a beginner.” You will receive instruction on how to play and have fun exploring the fundamentals of chess including openings, strategies and tactics that the professionals use. Plenty of time will be given to play some friendlies too. Learning to play chess is a great way to help develop your concentration, memory, self-esteem and your ability to collaborate and interact with others.


Young Doctors: Circulatory System

Ages: 9-12
Learning Area Focus: Science
Date: 17 April 2019
Time: 9:30 AM – 12:00 PM

Details: This is truly a workshop like no other. How many places on your body can you measure your heart rate? What does a real heart look like… inside? This workshop includes circulatory system theory, heart structure and function, measuring heart rate and a real heart dissection. Guided by a qualified teacher specialising in the sciences and a registered emergency nurse, students will explore the human body like never before which will develop practical dissection skills for the development of anatomical knowledge and foster critical and creative thinking. Maximum fun and exploration but not for the faint hearted!



Young Doctors: Nervous System

Ages: 9-12
Learning Area Focus: Science
Date: 17 April 2019
Time: 12:45 – 3:15 PM

Details: Another one of our unique workshops which will be sure to excite the aspiring doctors out there. You’re in possession of one of the most complex and incredible objects in the known universe: the human brain. Explore how your brain works and test your reflexes in this amazing workshop that will tingle your senses! We will delve into nervous system theory, eye structure and function, Blue Field Entoptic Phenomenon and even take a look at your own blind spot. Possible eye dissection (pending availability of organs). Guided by a qualified teacher specialising in the sciences and a registered emergency nurse, students will explore the human body like never before to develop anatomical knowledge and foster critical and creative thinking. Maximum fun and exploration but not for the faint hearted!


Getting to and from the venue:

  • Guildford Grammar Preparatory School.
  • Free parking on site.
  • Doors open 10 minutes prior to the workshop start time.
  • Once signed in at the workshop, parents are free to leave (but are welcome to stay up to the start time).
  • We kindly request that your child be collected promptly at the end of the workshop.

Booking two sessions over the same day:

  • Parents are able to drop their child off at 9:30 AM and be collected at 3:15 PM where the child will be supervised over the lunch break. Of course, parents are also welcome to be with their child for this period in between workshops.

What to bring:

  • We recommend an A4 folder, note pad, snack, water bottle (and lunch if booking two sessions over same day).
  • A zest for problem solving and a thirst for a challenge.
